Rims/Wheels 19/3/2004

The sizing of the stock rims are staggered front to back.

FRONT: 16" diameter x 6.5" wide, 215/55 tyres

REAR: 16" diameter x 7.5 wide, 225/50 tyres

There is plenty of space under the guards both front and back with the stock rims, and I really wanted to fill the guards out more. Knowing nothing of the required offsets, I bought a set of 16" Supra rims. The earlier model MKIV supras had 16" and later models had 17" rims.

The Supra rims are 16x8 front and back. I discovered that the offset was very nice for the rear, but at the front the inside of the rim fouled on the arm joining the upper and lower wishbones. (the TourerV has double wishbone suspension not strut-style). To overcome this I found that I needed an 8mm spacer behind each of the front wheels. Also the balancing weights on the inside of the wheel need to be stick on types not the clip ons, otherwise the weight will foul with afore-mentioned arm. This can however be fixed by bashing the lead weight nearly flat, which is easily done. The picture here shows the three different types of rims that I use on the car. From right to left: Stock TourerV front rim (16x6.5), Supra rim (16x8), Supra rim (17x9.5).

The later model Supra rims are 17x8 front and 17x9.5 rear. Since the later model rims are a larger diameter the front rims fit with only a 3 mm spacer however I like to fill the guards completely and so I am using the 8mm spacer.

This picture shows how both front and rear wheels fit very nicely under the car and make the car look much fatter. The widened track helps with stability too.

Out back I have used 3mm spacers just to get the wheels perfect, and also because the previous owner of these rims had the rear tyres fouling on the rear shocks a little. (they were previously on another JZX90)

So while I am very happy with the handling and grip levels provided by the Supra 17's, I feel what is lacking is dish. The next set of wheels I get will definitely be deep dish 18's.

On the track however I am always swapping rims and tyres so unfortunately the car rarely wears a full set of the same rims, though with a set of 18's kept strictly for street, this should be attainable.

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.

Whatever your vehicle is, whether it is a turbo car or NA or a Toyota or other manufacturer, I hope that the automotive information on this page is of benefit to you as you take the path of modification and upgrade on your car.
