Tourer V models

Toyota have produced the JZX series for quite some time now. Beginning in the late 80's, the models have continued to the current day 2004. The most recent being the MarkX, a move on from the MarkII designation.

The JZX series of Toyta sedans began with the JZX81, followed with the JZX90, then the JZX100 and more recently the JZX110. The letter designation is as follows:
JZ - Engine series (1JZ or 2JZ hence why the Supras are JZA70 and JZA80)
X - Chassis code (in this case a particular sedan chassis)
90 - Series number

Toyota released each of these model in 3 basic configurations. From cheapest to most expensive they are:

Cresta - Base model
Chaser - Sports model
MarkII - Luxury model

Each of these models also had the choice of the following engine options:

Avante - 3.0L 2JZGE (or 1JZGE in Avante 4)
Tourer-S - 2.5L 1JZGE (atmo engine)
Tourer-V - 2.5L 1JZGTE (twin turbo version)

To confuse things a little more, there were sub models of the JZX series such as (JZX91, JZX93, JZX101, JZX105 etc) with varying options, and there were also GX versions (rather than JZX) which came with the a 2.0L 4 cylinder petrol engine and an LX version with a 2.4L diesel engine, however there is nothing worthwhile to discuss about these models apart from the strange fact that the Avante version also came with the option of AWD! (pity they didn't consider this option for the TourerV as it may very well have given the GTR a scare). There were some other even less exciting models like the SX (1.8L 4cyl) but I will disregard those as they are not really very interesting. We will stick to the JZX series of TourerV models as these are the turbocharged ones and the ones that are most exciting. Toyota did however produce a TRD version of the JZX100 which came with some tuning tweaks to the suspension, and a factory bodykit. Toms also produced a special model known as the X540 (Gran Turismo fans should know about this car). This model is similar to the likes of HSV and FPV cars, in that it is an enhanced production model.

Following on from the twin turbocharged JZX81 and JZX90 series, the JZX100 and JZX110 series came with VVTi and a single turbo which produced a little more torque, but also much lower in the rev-range. Peak torque was raised marginally in the JZX100 and later models, and occurred at 2400rpm compared to 4800 rpm in the non-VVTi twin turbo engines.

It is common opinion that in the JZX90 series the MarkII was the better looking version, and in the JZX100 that the chaser was the more attractive and sportier looking of the three. Differences were relatively minor and mostly cosmetic. Changes included lights, minor panel shape changes and some feature differences. What didn't change however (in the TourerV spec), was the torquey 1JZ turbo motor.

The relatively common thing to do in Australia is to buy an Australian delivered luxury Cressida, then buy a 1JZ front cut (MA70 Supra, JZZ Soarer, or JZX series sedan) and fit the motor and gearbox to the Cressida. Apparently they bolt straight in and only require some minor clutch modifications (as the Cressidas were all Automatic), and for a relatively low budget, you have the ultimate sleeper: a car that looks like Grandpa owns it, with the performance that will shame the best that Holden or Ford could ever deliver!

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.
