Grill Mod 13/3/2005

The two grills shown here are both JZX90 Mark II TourerV grills. The top version is from the first release 1993 and the lower one is from my car which was released late 1994. There seem to be a number of minor changes that were implemented in the first and second series including indicator lenses and front bumper differences.

I decided that since I had 2 grills, I would try some experimentation with one of them. Using a soldering iron, I melted off four of the horizontal slats from inside the top grill. With a lot of care and patience, they can be removed quite effectively, and the rough edges can even be smoothed over to a large degree with the hot iron. After the edges are smoothed, they can be sanded back to a smoother finish. Any irregularities can be filled with epoxy filler, and the grill can then be painted. Since my grill is a work in progress I have decided to hold of on completely finishing it as I wish to later have a go at reshaping to a fair degree and possibly incorporating some eyelids into the design.

After I had removed all of the slats, I glued in some aluminium mesh on to the back to make the grill look more complete. I used a hot melt glue gun, however this is not proving to be very effective in the long run as some of the glued spots keep letting go. The last step was to glue in the grill emblem (which is the same as the Cressida emblem for those astute enough to notice), and refit the grill. I kept on getting a lot of glare form the numberplate when trying to take the phot in the garage, hence the blue rag.

Here is the finished item the next day out in the sun. I found that the aluminium brace for the oil cooler was far too obvious in the daylight, so I painted it with some flat black acrylic. Upon retrospect, I am not sure that the air flow will be much improved considering the aluminium mesh, so future plans involve removing the mesh and probably making up a single horizontal slat in the middle of the grill. This I will do when I re-shape the grill to be a bit more agressive looking.

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.

Whatever your vehicle is, whether it is a turbo car or NA or a Toyota or other manufacturer, I hope that the automotive information on this page is of benefit to you as you take the path of modification and upgrade on your car.
