Chassis Stiffening - Cusco Strut Brace 7/8/2004

In all motorsports, chassis bracing and stiffening is deemed an improvement on the stock chassis. Any way that you can imporve the stiffness of the chassis is good as it allows the suspension to work more effectively without distortion and flex.

No motorsport benefits more from chassis stiffening than drifting. In fact a flexing chassis (and soft suspension) can seriously hamper your attempts to drift a car. It is with this in mind that I purchased a three point Cusco front tower brace.

I had purchased this strut bar unseen. It was listed on the Cusco web site but there was no picture or description more than stating that it was a "triangulated" version. I liked the sound of it and assuming it was a three point brace I went ahead and ordered it. A couple of months later it arrived and I was very pleased to see the quality and sheer beauty of this thing.

The rear mounting points attached at pre-existing bolts and was very easy to mount. It was simply a matter of removing the bolts that were there (holding on a section of breather pipe for the braking system), placing the bracket underneath, and then bolting it all back into place. Everything fitted back in very neatly as if it was meant to be there. I love Japanese engineering.

The bar is a rounded flat item, and the welds look neat and strong. In normal driving it is very difficult to ascertain a difference in the cars handling. It is only at non-legal speeds (on the track) and with the car pitched violently sideways it is noticable that the front end is stiffer. Often it is very hard to determine the value of such a mod as the changes are sometimes minimal and/or require a high level of driver skill to exploit. Perhaps with further under chassis braces and maybe even a cage and more driving experience I will be able to more effectively judge these sorts of mods.

I also zip tied some old socks (yes I used to wear bright blue socks once upon a time *embarrased*) over the power steering and hydraulic fan reservoirs to catch any fluid spills that might eventuate due to extreme testing of the tower bar, and further activities at the track.

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.

Whatever your vehicle is, whether it is a turbo car or NA or a Toyota or other manufacturer, I hope that the automotive information on this page is of benefit to you as you take the path of modification and upgrade on your car.
