Cam Gears Arrive 18/2/2005

OK so there is not much to say about the CAM gears arriving since they are not yet installed, but I took some photos anyway and spent some time admiring them.

At the same time I ordered a new timing belt. Timing belts for 1JZs (and perhaps other cars as well) should be replaced at or before the 100,000 km mark. Although my car at this stage is still a way off reaching the magic 100 thou K mark, I though it was better to be prepared and perhaps do it early. After ordering the belt first, I thought "hmmm maybe I should also get vernier cam gear .... HKS ones look pretty cool". While waiting for the cam gears I thought to myself "hmm maybe I should also get cams while I am at it since it will be easier to replace the whole lot together rather than doing it seperately."

Then it occurred to me that to get the best out of the new cams and adjustable cam gears, it would be worthwhile to get a programmable engine management system. After all that wuold be necessary after I install the big front mount intercooler, and I would certainly need it before I installed the 650cc Sard injectors. This would then all provide me with the capability to install a larger single turbo such at the GT3040 BB core turbine with say a 50mm wastegate and custom SS "six into one" manifold.

At this point I realised that I needed to pace myself. This was going to cost me a fortune if I was not careful. Still the thought of a 300+ rwkW psycho drift machine pervades my thoughts.

Well I am getting really off track now.
Anyhow, don't these gears look just horn in their purple and blue anodised finish? They look good standing still. In fact, I think I will have the cam gears exposed not only for ease of adjustment when tuning, but also so I can look at them every time I open the bonnet.

In fact when my wife spied them on the desk, she asked my what they were. I said they were cam gears for my car and she said she liked the look of them and then asked if she could have them on her car!! My wife knows almost nothing about cars, but she likes things that are pretty, and she definitely liked these cam gears.

I think the funniest thing is that she likes the rims on her car more than she likes the car. I discussed selling her car and she didn't seem to mind, but she emphatically stated that she was going to keep the rims! Are all women so aesthetically orientated?

Update 8/10/2005

After discovering the weakness of this particular cam gear I decided not to install them. The problems is that they are manufactured from an aluminium alloy that is too soft and causes premature excessive wear on the teeth faces. The result is a motor that slowly changes the cam timing as it wears and ultimately causes catastrophic failure of the timing belt.

Fortunately the 1JZ is a non-interference engine so no engine damage would result, but still the inconvenience of being stranded and then needing to buy new cam gears meant that I decided to sell them cheap and purchase a higher quality set of cam gears at a later date.

Turbo pages and Headlights
I have recently added a new page about my single turbo conversion. There is a second page yet to come, but page one outlines some of the supporting components needed as well as the turbo itself. Page 2 will be forthcoming where I detail the fitment of the turbo, manifold and wastegate. I have also added a page for modifications to my headlights that should be very useful for owners of import vehicles.

Site Revamp
Wow, it has been a very long time since I worked on the site, but now I am in the process of redesigning it so stay tuned as I add some more content and attempt to bring this project up to date.

Car Changes
Lots has happened since my last update on upgrades to the car. For instance the car is now running a 2JZ bottom end and the gearbox has been completely rebuilt with a stage 1.5 shift kit, beefier clutches and a 2800 rpm stall convertor. To say that this has transformed the car is an understatement. The car is now torque heaven, and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The lag that was sadly felt with the 2.5L motor is now completely gone with the 3L and the stally. When I can find time to update the site with the process I went through I will do so. I have many hundreds of pictures to add.

Whatever your vehicle is, whether it is a turbo car or NA or a Toyota or other manufacturer, I hope that the automotive information on this page is of benefit to you as you take the path of modification and upgrade on your car.
